More GIS stuff. I looked at patterns of walkability and bikability in the greater Los Angeles area, focusing on the two beach districts: 1) Santa Monica, Venice and Marina del Rey, north of LAX and 2) Redondo, Manhattan and Hermosa Beach - the South Bay cities.
Here’s some layouts. If you are interested in more, you can download the full presentation slides and the write-up. Or look at some more layouts.
[in brief] It turns out that downtown Santa Monica is the most “pedestrian-sustainable” neighborhood: it sports the highest number of amenities, an adequate number of schools and grocery stores (uniformly distributed), bicycle lane access and is also the only significantly illuminated residential area at night. As it is populated by lower income families (compared to the rest of Santa Monica and the south bay cities), it is probably the only area in which many individuals benefit of its walkability and bikability.
